"My year participating in TAPIF was the third time I had lived long-term in France. Previously, I had lived there for study at the high school and college levels, so working in France was a completely new experience! It was a great way to learn new skills like being independent in a foreign country, cross-cultural communications, and of course, the French language!

During TAPIF I worked primarily in a high school, but also a few hours a week in a middle school. I had a lot of independence in managing the classes and preparing lesson plans. Since I worked with older students, the cultural lessons that incorporated English language components were big hits with the students as they typically learn about American culture through movies and TV shows. I also lived with a host family while teaching, which gave me a full immersion experience that made my TAPIF year really memorable. I really loved living in Lyon, a city and region I hadn't previously experienced, but one that is filled with culture, history, and of course, food! Additionally, I got to travel a lot, meeting up with family and friends in France and surrounding countries like the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy.

The teaching experience gave me a lot of transferable skills for my future jobs and soon-to-be career. After TAPIF I earned my JD/MPH and now work in education again, but as an administrator working on COVID-19 preparedness and response. I also continue my Francophone engagement by serving on the board of the Alliance Française Minneapolis-St. Paul."
