The Center is co-sponsored by the Provost’s Office at Texas A&M University and housed at the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research. Golsan serves as director and consults with the Advisory Board in planning activities. Activities are frequently co-sponsored by the Euro Department at TAMU and the Glasscock Center.
As noted, the Center is co-Sponsored by the Provost’s Office at Texas A&M University and housed in the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research. Its Director Golsan and Advisory Board Members Bracher and Schoolcraft work closely with French institutions including theUnversite-Paris III- Sorbonne Nouvelle, the IHTP, and the Memorial at Caen in the areas of research as well as teaching. Golsan has been Visiting Professor (professeurassocie) at Paris III (2001) and Bracher lectured at the Universite Michel de Montaigne- Bordeaux III, in 2010. Golsan and Schoolcraft are members of the CERACC at Paris III, and have participated in numerous colloquia there. In May-June 2012 the France/TAMU Institute will co-host with Paris III, the CERACC, Columbia University, and the Universities of Leeds and Durham in the UK an international symposium international symposium entitled “Vichy et apres” at Paris IIi from 30 May to 1 June 2012. The proceedings of the conference will be published by Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle.
In summer 2012 Golsan will co-direct with Henry Rousso an NEH Summer Seminar for College Teachers entitle France’s Haunting Past. The host institution is the IHTP. Golsan and Bracher have previously directed nine NEH Summer Seminars for School Teachers beginning in 1994 on the memory of World War II in French culture. These seminars have been housed at the Memorial in Caen.
The Texas France/ Texas A&M University Institute focuses primarily on the troubled and often controversial relationship between history and memory in modern French society, and especially the politicaland historical debates, and cultural and literary activities and productions associated with their complex interactions. To that end, the Institue has so-far welcomed Olivier Rubinstein, formerly Director of Denoel and currently director of French cultural services in Israel, to speak about the discovery and publication Nemirovsky’s Suite francaise. It has also welcomed the novelist and actor Richard Mrgieve, many of whose most important works deal with the legacies of Vichy and World War II. Beginning in Spring 2012, the France/TAMU Institute will co-host with the Glasscock Center an ongoing lecture series entitled “The Trials of History, Genocide, and Human Rights.” Anticipated speakers (all of whom have accepted to come) include the documentary film-maker Michel Prazan, Pascal Bruckner, and Annette Levy-Willlard, Liberation’s lead reporter on the prosecution and trials of Rene Bousquet, Paul Touvier, and Maurice Papon.
